Tempted to hackintosh
Last week I found out about running OS X on non Apple hardware. It does not seem too hard, but still a bit of a hassle. Also it is not a legal option. The idea interested me though and I researched it a bit, but in the end I gave up. Installing updates is too risky, hardware constraints too tight and I do not want to move in the direction of a company that I disrespect even more than Microsoft… I’ll just stick with Ubuntu.
I have noticed though that at times it is kind of hard to stay away from the Apple site. Their products look good and OS X seems to be a fine operating system to work with. Then why am I hesitant to buy an Apple product? It is not the high price that holds me back. There are two reasons. One, it is the fact that Apple seems to drop the ball on product quality in nearly every product and two, Apple must be the single most arrogant company in the IT world.
Of course the net is full of complainers and you can find a faulty item in every product line, it is not that. Several people I know have Apple computers and some of these systems spend more time in repair than on a desk being used. The ipod is not exactly the benchmark for portable sound quality, iPhone touch screens break down in no time, Apple put low quality screens in several batches of their computers and if you complain too much on their forums they will just shut them down. All in all, it is a company to stay away from.
But sigh, their products look schweeeeet. What are the alternatives? Sony? They make nice looking stuff, but I hear their support is almost as bad as Apple’s… Dell? Hell no, ugly ass stuff (except for the XPS M1330). Oh well, we’ll see what happens when I really can’t stop myself any longer and just have to get an ultra portable… I bet I will have one in about a year from now. That’s usually the amount of time I manage to stop myself from buying expensive stuff I don’t really need…
